How to harness your child's boredom

How to harness your child's boredom

TV psychologist Emma Kenny shares her five top tips for helping your children use boredom effectively and to their advantage.

 Boredom

1. Set the scene

Explain what you're doing and why. 'Mummy's going to read her book because she wants to have some time to herself.'

2. Imagination is key

Give your child a list of things that you used to do to fill your time. Building forts, finding shapes in the clouds, making sock puppets and putting on a show...

3. Make it special

Call this time something fun such as 'super self-time' - this makes it an actual activity, and a simple one that your child directs.

4. Stick with it

If your child isn't used to spending time in this way, it might cause an issue at first - but don't feel guilty. Like any change it will take time, but you'll find children are very adaptable.

5. Have a debrief

After the 'super self-time', get together with your child and talk about what they enjoyed. Listen to what your child has done and praise them. Involve yourself in whatever thoughts they've had or things they've created. This will positively anchor their experience and add to the worth.
