How to: Enjoy yoga with toddlers in tow
The long winter days can drive us and our toddlers a little stir crazy, and keeping little ones calm as well as entertained is no easy task. Dawn Geddes reveals how practising yoga with your child is the perfect way to add some Zen to your day
Practicing yoga is a brilliant way for you and your little one to relax and exercise together, Dawn discovers. The ancient practice offers so many amazing benefits to yogis (that's yoga practitioners to you and me). It improves flexibility, reduces anxiety and helps to improve our concentration – perfect for getting those baby brains back in to shape! It even helps children and adults to get a good night's sleep – and that's not to be sniffed at!
When I started practicing yoga with my girls Beth, 2 and Carly 6, I was amazed at the difference it made. We would often reach a point in our day when the girls would become increasingly tired and irritable. Every two minutes there would be another emotional outburst, tantrum or a sudden burst of energy which would result in one of them falling over and hurting themselves.
Yoga gives the children something to focus on and it's a fantastic way to get their little bodies moving. It releases stress hormones that build up during the day and by helping our children to learn this exercise at a young age, we're equipping them with a fantastic tool for coping with life's stresses and strains.
