Under #bressure?

What is a brelfie?

In short: a breastfeeding selfie.

The trend started with celebrities sharing pictures of themselves breastfeeding across their social media pages – everyone from Blake Lively and Miranda Kerr, to Gwen Stefani and Gisele Bundchen.

They were quickly named 2015's biggest parenting trend by Netmums. One in five breastfeeding mothers say they've taken a brelfie – and 68.5 per cent of women told This Morning they would post a brelfie online.

Mums have been hoping to raise awareness, ensure breastfeeding becomes more widely accepted in public, on social media, and for mums to be able to breastfeed wherever they need to.

Some mums say it's a way to celebrate women's bodies and what they're able to do, and 88 per cent of mothers said social media sites are wrong to delete the images. Sites like Instagram and Facebook previously deleted images for 'breaching community guidelines' – which they have since updated.

#Bressure

However, some mums have said it puts pressure on women who struggle to breastfeed, making them feel guilty. Others have said it's a private, intimate moment between mother and baby and shouldn't be shared on social media.

After the brelfie trend came the #bressure campaign, mums saying brelfies made them feel under pressure to breastfeed. 69 per cent of respondents to a Channel Mum survey said they have been judged negatively for not breastfeeding, and half claimed the pro-breastfeeding campaign has now gone too far and places too much stress on new mums.

What are your thoughts on the brelfie trend?
