Mums suffering anxiety and depression in silence

Mums suffering anxiety and depression in silence

One in three women are suffering depression and anxiety when pregnant, and over half suffer from the baby blues post-natal

Pregnancy

Before and after pregnancy is an incredibly emotional time for mums, and new research suggests more women than estimated are suffering from depression and anxiety.

A survey by The Baby Show found 60 per cent of mums said they suffered from the baby blues after giving birth – a quarter from post-natal depression.

Nearly half (44 per cent) admitted to feeling isolated once they'd given birth because of working partners and feelings of losing their identity. Worryingly, 62 per cent said they didn't get the support or treatment they needed.

Another survey by BabyCentre found around 30 per cent of mums-to-be frequently experience five or more indicators of depression.

42 per cent had never told their doctor or midwife about it due to feeling guilty, embarrassed or worried about feeling judged. Almost half did not want to be labelled as mentally ill. 26 per cent had not even discussed it with a partner, close friend or relative, leaving mums and mums-to-be to suffer in silence

There will be a panel at The Baby Show discussing post-natal depression on Friday 23 October with Rachel Boyd from Mind, Mark Williams of Dads Matter UK and YouTube star Bryony Gordon.
