Should home births become normal again?

NHS suggest second-time mums should aim for home births unless pregnancy is high risk

Giving birth at home, that was the norm in the early 1900s and it wasn't until the NHS was created in 1948 that more and more women gave birth in hospital.

Most mums of young children today would probably have been advised to give birth in a hospital or midwife led unit, but the NHS is now having a huge policy shift, saying second-time mothers should be encouraged to have their baby at home unless their pregnancy has been deemed high risk.

Expectant mothers now will be advised to give birth outside of the hospital environment as long as their pregnancy is considered low risk and they do not suffer from asthma, diabetes, epilepsy or other chronic health conditions.

The advice is slightly different for first time mothers who will be told they are just as safe having their baby in a small midwife-led unit as on the labour ward.
