Mums more likely to face workplace discrimination
Mums returning to work are more likely to face workplace discrimination now than 10 years ago. An estimated 54,000 new mums are losing their jobs every year - almost twice the number identified in 2005.
A report from the Equality and Human Rights Commission found 10 per cent of mums-to-be in Britain were discouraged from attending antenatal appointments by their employers.
One in nine were dismissed, made redundant or treated so badly they had to quit. However, two-thirds of mums did say they felt supported by their employers during their pregnancy and returning to work.
The report found that:
- One in five new mums had experienced harassment or negative comments in the workplace when pregnant or returning to work
- Seven per cent were put under pressure to hand in their notice
- One in twenty had a pay or bonus cut after returning to work
- 10 per cent were treated worse by their employer after having a baby
Three in four bosses also said female job applicants should reveal whether they are pregnant during a job interview.
