Too much great British baking?
Mums are cooking with their children more than ever – but the focus is on sweet treats.
Although an impressive 50 per cent of mums are cooking with their children at least once a week, they're baking cakes and biscuits with their little ones rather than cooking family meals.
The report from Little Dish found that 12 per cent of Britain's mums manage to do a cooking activity with their children almost every day – but 77 per cent are baking sweet treats rather than savoury meals and snacks.
Parents answered that, as far as cooking skills go, while their children regularly fill cake cases, whisk eggs and sieve flour, far fewer chop fruit and vegetables, grate cheese or use herbs and spices on a regular basis, and they are less equipped to cook meals.
Although cakes and biscuits are fun, easy and remind us of our childhood, says dietician Lucy Jones, it's really important to get children excited about savoury food if they are to develop healthy eating habits later in life.
Children find making meatballs, mashing potatoes and squeezing lemons just as fun as filling cake cases or sieving icing sugar after all!
