Child car seats – for cars only

Child car seats – for cars only

A leading baby charity is looking to raise awareness of the dangers of leaving babies in car seats

Car seat

The Lullaby Trust, dedicated to preventing sudden infant deaths, is issuing new guidance to parents advising babies are supervised when in car seats and not left in them for extended periods of time, and has called for more research into car seat safety.

Babies' airways are still developing and they don't have the ability to support their heads, and so sitting upright in a seat for a long period of time can be dangerous for babies.

The Trust has said car seats shouldn't be used as beds for children to sleep in outside of a vehicle, and children should never be in a car seat with unbuckled or partially buckled straps.

Babies should be lying down when they sleep, as we do, but too many families and carers are using them to take babies shopping or as beds, which can lead to suffocation.
