The £65 fertility test

The £65 fertility test

An affordable new test could check your fertility status – would you base such an important life decision on it?

If you were at risk of premature ovarian ageing, would you want to know about it?

American doctors have designed a fertility test for women between 18 and 35 that could test your fertility status and whether you're at risk from the condition that affects one in 10 women, and means they will have fewer eggs than average.

The test, called 'What's My Fertility', would cost around £65 and involves three blood tests and a detailed lifestyle and family history. Experts would then look for hormonal changes and genetic defects that can affect your fertility.

Those at high risk would be warned not to delay trying for a baby or to freeze eggs for IVF.

However, British experts have warned about the test altering your decisions, and putting off trying for children, even if you aren't at risk. Hormone tests are not always accurate and although can give an indication of the number of eggs you have, they cannot tell how healthy eggs are, and infertility can be caused by a wide range of issues.

The NHS advises couples have their fertility tested after 12 months of unsuccessfully trying for children.
