Is your child's dance lesson safe?

Babyballet founder responds to the RAD warning that unqualified dance teachers can seriously damage children physically

You wouldn’t put your child in shoes that were too small – but have you thought about the effects their dance lessons could be having? Certainly the Royal Academy of Dance has.

Last year it warned parents about the dangers of enrolling their children in classes with unqualified dance teachers and is encouraging parents to check their children’s dance teacher’s qualifications.

A representative of the Royal Academy told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme qualifications for teachers of this age are more important than at any other stage because children’s bones are flexible and unset, and certain moves could be very dangerous for their development – particularly for under-twos.

Babyballet founder Claire O'Connor agrees, but is keen to point out that her company 'Babyballet' should not be confused with the generic term baby ballet: ‘Since Babyballet began in 2005, we have worked closely to implement a stringent recruitment, training and ongoing support programme for all Babyballet teachers. Anyone who is familiar with our classes will know that we would never endanger our pupils with advanced or improperly taught techniques and that our teachers are professional and passionate about teaching children to dance. So, rest assured, your children are in very, very safe hands.'

The Royal Academy has a register of its accredited dance teachers here. For details of Babyballet classes in your area, visit babyballet.co.uk.
