New fertilisation device for IVF

A private fertility clinic is offering a new form of IVF treatment, which they hope will mean healthier pregnancies

A private fertility clinic is offering couples the chance to undergo IVF treatment where conception occurs in the womb instead of in the lab.

It’s hoped that making fertilisation more ‘natural’ will mean healthier pregnancies.

The Complete Fertility Centre in Southampton is the first in the UK to use the new method, known as the AneVivo device method. It works by placing a tiny capsule that contains both the sperm and egg into the uterus.

The clinic is offering the treatment to private patients and costs around £700.

The aim is to maximise the time the embryo spends in the body, as some studies have suggested that growing embryos in a dish increases the risk of genetic and other health defects, although the resulting embryo still needs to be removed and given a health check in the lab before being reimplanted.

Although the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) has approved the method, there’s currently no evidence yet of whether it will be any better than traditional IVF.
