Pregnant women to receive £3k ‘birth budgets’
All pregnant women will be provided with a £3,000 maternity budget as a result of a national maternity review
Pregnant women will be offered personal budgets worth at least £3,000 to pick and choose the care they receive, as a result of a national maternity review.
It’s all part of NHS England’s plans to increase the birth choices women have, improving safety in maternity services and encouraging more women to have their babies at home or in small midwife-run centres than in hospitals. Nearly nine in 10 women give birth in hospital even though only one in four say this is where she would want to have a baby..
Uncomplicated births cost the NHS around £3,000 each, and now women will have more say over how that money is spent.
Women won't be receiving the money directly, but will be able to draw up a maternity plan setting out how it will be spent on NHS-accredited services with a midwife or doctor.
