‘Sorry I can’t be there but I have a good excuse,’ Suranne Jones told guests at the Broadcasting Press Guild Awards via video link on Friday. And what better excuse than the birth of her first child?

The 37-year-old actor star of Doctor Foster and Coronation Street revealed that her and husband, magazine editor Laurence Akers, had welcomed a son last week.

They revealed they were expecting their first child back in January when Suranne turned up to the National Television Awards red carpet with a baby bump and revealed she was seven months pregnant.
