National Storytelling Week- 26th January

We know that you don't need an excuse to read to your tots, but with National Storytelling Week coming up on the 26th January, we thought it a good time to update your collection of books or try something new. Here's a fab way to begin a love of books for tiny babies with the Wondercube. Inspired by one mum's frustration as her child constantly pulled all the wet wipes out of the packet, classic tales like Goldilocks and the Three Bears are brought to life in 12 material squares, that pull out of the Wondercube, each one with a different sound or feel that can be pulled apart and put back together in any order. There are lots of different stories, numbers, or even the alphabet available to go with the Wondercube. How wonder-ful.

Wondercube, £17.99, Goldilocks filler and storybook, £12.99, wondercube.co.uk

Lion King Autism performance

In a first for London’s West End, an autism-friendly performance of Disney’s The Lion King is taking place on Sunday 14th April, 2013, at the Lyceum Theatre. The National Autism Society has worked together with Disney to create a friendly atmosphere, with designated quiet and activity areas, and staff that are trained autism experts. Adjustments have been made to the performance itself with a reduction of some of the loud sounds and strobe lighting. The cast of The Lion King and the front of house staff have also been given training to understand the needs of children and adults with autism.

To help make this performance accessible to all, the owners of the Lyceum Theatre have agreed to waive their usual booking fees. A dedicated website has been set up to book tickets for the performance, which start at £39.50 for the stalls.

To book a ticket or for more information look at lionkingautismfriendly.com

Disney cafe at Harrods

Whether you have a mini Cinderella, or a Buzz Lightyear, the Disney Cafe at Harrods is a real treat for little ones. With tiny screens with all the favourite Disney movies being played, and a Big Ben that chimes every half an hour when it's storytime, it's really good fun. If they really wanted kids to tuck in though, it might have been a good idea to name the food after some of the much loved characters.. we're thinking Lightening McQueen mini cheeseburgers followed by a Tinkerbell Knickerbocker Glory...

Rotten apple

Parents need to be more vigilant, according to latest reports, as children are managing to clock up hundreds of pounds worth of purchases on iPhones and iPads. Many apps for children only allow you to get to the next level by ‘purchasing’ it, and it’s very easy for a tiny tot to press ‘yes’. With all the amazing Apps out there for children, make sure you have your in-app purchase button ‘disabled’ or you might be hit with a rather large bill from Apple.

To turn off your in-app purchases (IAP) on an iPhone, go to Settings, tap General, then Restrictions, and then set an unlock code. Also, scroll down to the In-App Purchases switch and slide to off.

Have a look at our article Brave World Baby as we investigate the pros and cons of touchscreen technologies for tots.
