Craft cupboard essentials

✦ Good PVA glue
✦ Paint
✦ Masking tape
✦ Googly eyes
✦ Cheap copier paper
✦ Used loo/kitchen rolls
✦ Feathers
✦ Old bits of fabric
✦ Craft foam or felt
✦ Old cereal boxes

What they can do when

1 year old
Let them go crazy with finger paints. Give them a big sheet of paper and create as much mess as they like. When everything is dry, they can watch you cut up the results and make bunting for their room, or greeting cards for the family.

2 years old
Make window art with sticky-backed plastic. Place the plastic sticky side up on the table (secure it with masking tape) and give them bits and pieces – such as tissue paper and feathers – to stick on. They're fun to make, and quite easy on the mess, too.

3 years old
Let them paint some old loo rolls. When the paint has dried, they can add googly eyes, stick on old bits of fabric to make clothes and add wool for hair. They'll end up with a family of new toys to play with.

How to: Make edible (un-tasty) finger paint

✦ 2 cups cornflour
✦ 1 cup cold water
✦ 4 cups boiling water ✦ Liquid food colouring

✦ In a pan mix the cornflower and cold water. Put the pan over a low to medium heat, then stir in the hot water, half a cup at a time.

✦ When all is combined, and you have a smooth, thick, custard-like consistency, put in jam jars.

✦ Add food colouring to each jar (the more colouring you add, the darker the paint will be).

✦ Cool... and paint!
