Train your baby's brain from 6 months

Your baby can probably sit up unaided now and he might turn around when you call his name.

SKILLS 6 months

What he can do
He will start to grab at objects around him and pass an item from hand to hand and from hand to mouth, so ensure all toys are safe and not a choking hazard. He will start rolling, too, so be aware of this at unexpected times, like nappy changing. Remember to say his name often, and in different contexts.

How to encourage him
By six months, around half of all infants babble incessantly. You can expect lots of ‘goo goos’ and ‘baa baas’. Talk to him, read to him, sing to
him, clap hands with him. Explain what you are doing. The more language he hears, the better, and he’ll love to be near you. Make sure he has lots of interesting objects within his range. Keep little hands busy by showing how him how to turn the pages of a book, hold a spoon, use a flannel in
the bath. Point out his features to him in the mirror. Safety is an issue now – those scissors on the floor are as interesting as that fluffy bunny.

The right toys for now
He will delight in cuddly toys, balls with a bell inside, anything that makes a noise when picked up and squeezed or shaken. You don’t have to spend a fortune, though. He’ll get as much fun from banging saucepans with a wooden spoon as he will playing with a noisy toy.

Take it a step further
‘Let your baby guide you as to what interests him. No matter how odd his obsessions seem, try to indulge and explore them. Research shows that babies learn more quickly if their carers talk to them about the things they choose to look at rather than trying to divert their interest to other things.’
