Quick tips to avoid baby skin irritation

Here are some helpful tips on daily things you can try and avoid to ease irritation to your baby's skin.

There are many common baby skin irritants that can result in spots or rashes appearing on your little one's skin. And no mum wants any marks on their baby's beautiful skin.

Clothing

Some fabrics – such as wool and nylon – can irritate babies who are already prone to skin conditions. Opt for cotton, silk or bamboo, which are softer and more comfortable.

Over bathing

Keep baths to a minimum, as too many can strip away the natural, protective oils from your baby's skin, leaving it more likely to be irritated. A sponge bath two to three times a week is fine for the first month, and you should limit proper baths to three times a week for the first year.

Detergents

To be on the safe side, only wash your newborn's clothes in mild, fragrance- and dye- free non-bio options.

Fragranced skincare

Scented soaps, bubble baths and skincare can aggravate infant skin. Water alone is enough to keep your little one clean for the first four weeks. If you do use skincare in these early days, do a patch test first – apply it to a small area of your baby's skin to check for reactions.
