week 20

Your baby this week

It's almost time for solids and your little baby is growing up! You probably look at your baby and wonder where the past five months have gone. From now on in your baby is less like a baby and more like the boisterous toddler he will become.

Sitting

At five months you may be able to prop your baby up in a sitting position using cushions around him in case he topples, or by sitting him with his back against your tummy supporting his back and neck. He may be able to take the full weight of his head for a few moments but be prepared for a few falls before he masters the art of balance. Giving your 20 week old baby lots of practise using those important muscles that will help him sit unaided soon.

Teething

Some babies are born with visible teeth, while others can take months for their first teeth to appear. While it’s true that some babys sail through teething without a care in the world, but the majority do suffer from painful gums, as well as diarrhoea and tummy upsets caused by the extra acidity in the mouth during teething.

Signs of teething range from irritability, red cheeks and excessive dribbling. You may be able to feel the ridge of the tooth just below the gum, and the gum may be red and swollen at this point. Usually, the first teeth to emerge are the bottom front teeth, followed by the top front teeth, upper and lower side teeth, upper and lower molars, followed by the upper and lower canines, and the second molars last of all.
