Month 49

At 49 months your child is really getting curious about the world they live in. They are developing and enjoying their surroundings. They are growing up very fast (as you probably know) and they want to be more like you! They are developing their motor skills and are able to really begin to get involved with activities such as sports. They are also beginning to understand the basics of mathematics and are always asking questions trying to expand their horizons.  It is always important to remember that each child develops at different paces, and it is not necessarily a reflection on their abilities if they reach these stages earlier or later than other children.

Motor skills

At this stage your child should be able to completely dress themselves. They might still have a hard time tying their shoes, so be patient and keep teaching them, they will get there! By this point your child may be able to bounce and catch a ball, which means you can being playing sports with them! You can look into signing them up for children's sports activities such as football or ballet which could help continue developing their motor skills as well as keeping them fit and making new friends.

As well as getting better with catching and bouncing a ball, your child should be getting better at balancing - on one foot as well as hopping on one foot. You can help teach them games such as hopscotch to help them become even better at these balancing skills. On a nice day take your child to a park and let them run around because they probably have an abundance of energy. Since they are able to dress themselves, try letting them pick their outfit for the day. If they still insist on wearing the same clothes every day, it might be a good idea to choose their clothes the night before and lay them out. You could always lay two outfits out and let your child pick which one he wants to wear.

Social behaviour

At four years old, your child will have a concrete sense of what is right and what is wrong, but they do not understand that grey area that might come with this idea. For example, if your child tells you a fib, but then owns up to it, it can be hard to know whether to tell him off for lying or commend him for telling the truth. Children (and parents) can get very muddled when trying to work out the world and the bounderies in it. It might be a good idea to tell them you are glad they told the truth, but ask what they'd do differently next time to see if they have learnt anything.

Your child loves playing with other children and most of the time can share and take turns. They also love spending time with their family. They love to have an hour with you on their own as this makes them feel special and creates bonding time together. However, they do not like it if you cancel these special times. Your child is at the age where they know what they are feeling but they may not know how to deal with disappointment. Each child may react differently to these new emotions and feelings.  Even though your child might react poorly to the disappointment, for the most part, they want to be helpful and they want to please everyone.

Learning

Your child may be able to understand the difference between more and less, as well as the word many. They are starting to understand numbers and quantities. They will probably start using these words in sentences to ask for things. By understanding number quantities your child is beginning to understand the basics of mathematics.

Your little one is also at the curious stage where they are asking questions and want to know everything! They are intrigued by the world that they live in. It is a very exciting time, but they can also develop some annoying and frustrating skills like imitation when they will repeat everything everyone says, along with actions. It is a stage most children will go though, and although it may be frustrating, it is normal.
