Social behaviour

Your child still has a wild imagination, and probably will for a long time. They really enjoy using their imagination to be dramatic and let fantasy become part of their life. Even though they like make believe, they enjoy using simple props and will be content with just about anything. Their imagination can turn the simplest item into a magical game. With this in mind, don't go overboard buying toys for them, children can be content with saucepans and wooden spoons from your kitchen drawer. You may have noticed that your child is a little bit bossier as they like to be in charge and in control. Children at this stage enjoy the familiar so if there are big changes coming up in their life, help and prepare for them by explaining what is going to happen, well in advance.

Language

By now your child probably has a vocabulary of about 1,500 words They are learning a lot and absorbing all the information around them. At this stage children may be making up words because they enjoy the sound of silly words, especially if they rhyme. With their language skills rapidly developing they have probably started telling you stories, but they have also probably started telling you tall tales and other make believe scenarios. As well as telling stories, your child may be able to use and understand the difference between ‘had’, ‘have’, and ‘has’.  All of these aspects demonstrate how much language your child is gaining and how fast they are able to learn.

Attitude

Generally your child has a great attitude. They are probably smiling a lot and love life. They probably love joking around, teasing you, giggling and laughing a lot. They really enjoy silliness and nonsense and will enjoy having fun. There are times where this behaviour will not be appropriate, but for the most part, let them enjoy life, be silly and laugh a lot! There are times that your child might try to resist you and your rules. This is normal and they will grow out of this phase. They might try to test your boundaries and might even exceed your boundaries. They are curious with what they might be able to get away with at their new age.

Find out how your toddler will progress at 4 years and 4 months old
