What you eat could affect your baby's heart

Eating healthily before and during pregnancy could cut the risk of your baby developing a heart problem.

19,000 women were asked about their diet in the year leading up to their pregnancy and a healthier diet was linked to a lower chance of heart defects.

The pregnant women who ate the healthiest (a 'healthy' diet being one with plenty of fresh fish, fruit, nuts and vegetables) had a lower risk of having a baby with certain heart defects than those who ate least healthily.

The study was published in the Archives of Diseases in Childhood, Fetal and Neonatal Edition.

Congenital heart disease is one of the most common types of birth defect, affecting up to nine in every 1,000 babies born in the UK. Some conditions are due to faulty genes or chromosomes, but it is often unclear why.
