Why your fish intake during pregnancy could help you have a brainy baby
Eating fish during pregnancy improves the growth of your baby’s brain, researchers have found.
Researchers at Tohoku University’s School of Medicine in Japan found that nutrients like omega-6 and omega-3, found especially in oily fish, are essential for normal brain development of a pregnant woman’s unborn child.
When the researchers fed female mice a diet lacking these nutrients, their babies were born with smaller brains, showed higher anxiety levels and had brain abnormalities – even if they were raised on nutritionally optimised diets from early on.
They now believe these effects were caused by an imbalance of omega-6 and omega-3, and a balanced intake of the nutrients are key for mums-to-be to ensure their child’s healthy development.
