Too much fish during pregnancy linked to obesity

Overdoing it on the fish during pregnancy isn’t recommended, and it could even increase a child’s obesity risk

Too much of certain fish during pregnancy isn’t recommended – and now it could even be linked to childhood obesity.

Fish is of course good for you and your baby’s development, as it’s full of protein and omega 3 and improves the growth of your baby's brain. Current NHS advice is to avoid certain fish and limit your intake of oily fish.

A new study published by JAMA Pediatrics followed more than 26,000 pregnant women from 11 countries. The study followed up with them and their children until their child was six years old. Pregnant women who ate fish more than three times a week gave birth to children with higher BMIs and their children were at higher risk of rapid growth in infancy and childhood obesity.

Eating fish between once and three times a week wasn’t associated with an increased risk, however.

It’s not known why this is, and further investigation into whether the nutritional benefits of fish outweigh the risks is needed.
