Young mums 'crowdbirthing'

Young mums have sparked off a trend experts are dubbing 'crowdbirthing' or 'birth entourages', taking in an average of eight people to attend their baby's birth.

Friends, brothers, mothers-in-law and even their dads are making it into the delivery room with modern mums under 30 including more men and friends for support than before.

However, as birth becomes more social, 61 per cent of mums (and 79 per cent of mums under 25) also worry childbirth is becoming competitive and feel pressured to give birth without pain relief.

A third said they felt pressured to not use any pain relief knowing others would be judging their labour, and one in five said opting for a C-section would make them feel like they'd 'failed' at giving birth.

The study by Channel Mum pointed the finger at celebrities like supermodel Gisele Bündchen, who famously claimed that giving birth 'doesn't hurt'. One in ten said it was watching and hearing about other women's births in the media that spurred on their competitive spirit, and 17 per cent wanted to have a better birth than mums they met at antenatal classes and their friends.
