Delivery room: Who to let in

Delivery room: Who should be in there?

Theresa, mum to Danny, 6, Taylor, 4, Sonny, 2, and Jack, 9 months tells Heidi Scrimgeour who she allowed in the maternity suite for the births of her children

My eldest son Danny is adopted, but for the births of Taylor and Sonny both my husband Leigh and my mum were present – my mum has 19 grandchildren and has been there for quite a few of their births.

Then, when I was pregnant with our youngest child, we decided to ask Leigh's mum if she would also like to be with us during labour and delivery. We knew that we wouldn't be having any more children, so this was our last chance to include her in the birth experience.

She was quite surprised to be asked but also very pleased – she'd been there for the birth of her granddaughter but that was over 20 years ago.

Leigh didn't mind that he wasn't my only birth partner, and he really valued sharing his son's arrival with his own mum. Also, having three people supporting me during delivery meant that Leigh could go to the loo or get a drink without worrying that he'd be leaving me on my own.

My midwives were also very supportive of my decision to have more than one birth partner. Most midwives will be happy with whatever you choose as long as it helps keep you happy and comfortable.

My labour ended up being quite traumatic so I think Leigh appreciated having both our mums there for additional support. When my sons grow up, their grandmothers will be able to tell them that they were there when the boys were born, and that's very special.
