New pregnancy app for vaccination reminders

New pregnancy app for vaccination reminders

Researchers have produced an app to advise and remind pregnant women about vaccinations

Phone

A new app, MatImms (short for Maternal Immunations), wants to inform women what vaccinations you can get to protect from infections that can harm you and your baby.

Researchers and clinicians from Imperial College London and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust teamed up to develop the app after becoming concerned about the low uptake of certain vaccines among pregnant women.

Over a third of pregnant women surveyed in London 2013-14 weren’t aware they could have a whooping cough vaccination, which can protect your baby until its own vaccination after two months. And only 38.5 per cent of pregnant women were vaccinated for flu nationally last year.

The app includes a personalised vaccination schedule based on your due date – which can be synced to your phone’s calendar and give you reminders – and when to vaccinate your baby during its first year. It also has information on their ingredients and safety records to address concerns.
