5 things you didn’t know about pregnancy wet dreams

Sleep feels even more precious in pregnancy so why are you now experiencing vivid dreams?

Dreams

Read our expert advice on why you might expect your dreams to be more lively when you are pregnant.

1. Your sex drive is likely to be at its strongest during the second trimester

The fatigue and nausea you experienced in the first trimester may be behind you now and so your sex drive should come back in the second trimester.

2. Hormonal changes will create a heightened emotional state

‘Hormonal changes as the pregnancy develops can create a heightened emotional state, which in turn can lead to vivid dreams,’ says midwife of 20 years Alison Brown.

3. Hormonal changes can increase vaginal secretions

These hormonal changes can also increase the vaginal secretions that lubricate the vagina in preparation for birth,’ says Alison. This usually occurs from 37 weeks onwards, but can be earlier.

4. Pregnancy can disrupt the dream phase of sleep

‘Many experts believe the type of sleep you get when pregnant is responsible,’ says Alison. ‘Dreaming makes up about 25% of our sleep pattern, occurring during the deepest phase of the sleep cycle. Usually we sleep through this phase and don’t remember it. But during pregnancy, sleep can be interrupted because of your baby’s movements, needing to wee more, being generally uncomfortable and so on. It’s these interruptions during the dreaming phase that experts believe wake you up and cause you to remember your dreams – making them seem more real.

 5. Dreams can reflect your emotional wellbeing

‘Dreams tend to reflect your emotional wellbeing, so it can mean that your bond with your partner is strong,’ says Alison.

Alison Brown has been a midwife for 20 years and is an expert in ante- and postnatal care, and infant feeding.
