You may have noticed for some time that your baby enjoys bearing weight on his legs when you hold him upright. Although standing and walking are quite a few months away, he will be experimenting with his leg muscles and practising the skills needed. Old wives tales state that letting your child bear weight on his legs will make him bandy legged, but there is no truth in this at all. If your child wants to bear weight on his legs he obviously enjoys it, so why stop him? By the same token, if he doesn't seem to like it, don't make him do it. It won't make any difference to when he eventually walks and he may like it again in a month or so. Letting him bounce away in a door bouncer will help him to strengthen his leg muscles, experiment with balance, give him a bit of independence and provide him with heaps of fun.

At 27 weeks it is definitely the time to think about baby-proofing your house. As your baby learns to crawl, books and CDs will come flying off the shelves as little fingers explore and crayons may get ‘posted’ through your DVD player. There are lots of safety guards you can buy including stair guards and gates to seal off potentially dangerous rooms like the kitchen or bathroom. Babies like to poke their hands into plug sockets too so buying a few plastic guards may be wise. On the other hand, rather than wrap your whole house in cotton wool, you could practise a few stern ‘No’s’ when your baby goes for the TV plugs so he knows what is off limits. Often babies who know the limits from an early age learn quickly what they are and aren’t allowed to do.
If your 27 week old baby is still sleeping in your room, or your bed, you may want to think abourt moving him into his own room.
