Motor Skills

Your child should be active and spirited and running around full of endless amounts of energy- it might be hard for you to keep up! If you have taught your child how to ride a bike they will be practising to master that skill. They should be able to steer and manoeuvre. To test this out you can place some small obstacles in their path and measure how well they are able to avoid them. This is a skill that might take until your child is 52 months old, so do not be concerned if they are unable to do this yet. Your child is learning more about the world with jumping and skipping. You may she has a better grasp on finger hand activities and is probably better with buttons and zips at this stage.

 Naps

It might be a good idea to end afternoon naps for your child by this stage, which might take a little bit of effort because they may not like the idea of ending their sleeptime. By helping end your child’s naptime it could disrupt part of your normal routine because you no longer have that brief period of free time. At the beginning your child will probably feel very tired early in the evening and this may create a grumpy and frustrated child whilst they adjust. Ending naptime takes some time and to prevent them from falling asleep too early find activities that will keep them entertained and busy until their bedtime.  It will take time but your child’s body will get used to not getting his nap every day and eventually they will be able to stay up all day without a problem. Whilst they are learning to adjust to no daytime naps, they may need 'quiet time' at some point during the day. This might mean a cuddle with mummy and a story.

Friends

Your child probably has a couple of close friends, but they may have also created an imaginary friend. This may cause some concern for some parents, but it is nothing to worry about at this stage. An imaginary friend can further your child’s social skills as they enjoy the interaction with other people, use their imagination to create play and are trying to advance their skills. You need to remember that your child is very good at creating an imaginary world and this person is a part of that world.  At this point in your child’s life, let them enjoy being a child and let them enjoy living in a world of fantasy and imagination.
