Month 48

Congratulations, your child turns four this month! Can you believe how fast it has all gone? You are really seeing your child grow and blossom. As well as gaining more motor skills they are growing and changing sizes. They are also still living in their own little world and are filling their minds with imagination and adventure. They are having fun and are able to grasp more concepts in their life and are becoming better communicators.

Motor skills

By this stage your child is really becoming advanced. Your child should be able to hop well on one foot; they should be able to do this with both feet. By this point they should be able to walk up and down stairs with only one foot on each stair. It might be hard to let your child use scissors, but by this age they should be able to use them without much difficulty. (make sure they are special chils safe scissors)

By this stage in your child’s life they should be able to use building blocks to create structures such as houses or buildings. They should be able to have a purpose in their building and have concrete ideas on what they are designing.  By this point in your child’s life they should be able to go to the toilet on their own. Ideally they should be potty trained by the time they reach 48 months.

But don't worry if this hasn't quite happended yet- each child will do it at his or her own pace. Your child should also be able to play some sports and be able to kick a ball with some accuracy.  They should be coordinating better between eyes, feet and hands in order to play the different sports.

Size

You are well aware that your child is growing at a rapid pace. Your child is probably quite long and lean and may seem a little awkward in their ever-changing shape. If your child weighs more than 18 kilos you might want to consider getting rid of your car seat and using a booster seat instead.  A booster seat helps make the seatbelt more comfortable for your child.

Their world

Your child is very imaginative and they are living in their own little world. By now they should be able to understand more complex sentences with two different parts (ex: please pick up your toys and put on your shoes). Your child should also be able to use words such as ‘but’ and ‘and’ as well as being able to understand and identify sizes (larger, smaller, bigger, little).

With all of these wonderful developments it is also important to look at their own lives. They are very content to play imaginative games and have a lot of concern for others.  At this stage in your child’s life they are really interested in learning and are interested in lots of different topics, although they may get fact and fantasy confused because their worlds are so intertwined. They will also be willing to accept changes, but you, as the parent will need to prepare them for the change. Although your child may not have a very long attention span (8-12 minutes) they will begin to understand multitasking and will be capable of doing two different things at once.

Your child will probably tease you and make jokes to get you to laugh. They might get impatient and become a little bossy, but enjoy the time you have with them, because as you can already attest to, the time just flies by.
