Imagination

Your child is at a hard stage between fantasy and reality. The distinction between the two is becoming clearer, but it is not solidified. Therefore, your child will still be afraid of monsters and other scary things, as well as having nightmares. Toddlers sometimes develop irrational fears of things like the moon, or a toy they used to love. This is all normal and a phase that will pass. They may need reassurance from you, extra cuddles and possibly a nightlight for a while. Having an active imagination is a good thing, it helps them play make believe and can keep them occupied for a long time! They are able to create props with the simplest household goods and will love it. They will have fun making crafts and artwork using their imagination to create masterpieces.

Thinking

Your child is beginning to show their individuality. This might begin with them becoming persistent with finishing activities and could get a little stubborn. Along with this, they will enjoy counting objects; the counting will normally be accompanied with touching it. Your child may look at pictures and create stories and ‘read’ what is happening within the artwork. Along with creating stories, your child will most likely be able to find similarities and differences between pictures and be able to name and describe objects in the picture. They might do this through some of their own drawings. Even if what they are drawing is scribbles, always ask them what they have drawn and you will be treated to the most wonderful stories and descriptions.

Role Models

Your child looks up to you and admires you. At this stage they may become great little helpers around the house because they like doing household chores. They probably love setting the table or helping wash the dishes. (This phase doesn’t last long before they start complaining about it!) They want your approval and might feel hurt if they don’t seem to make you happy or do things to your satisfaction. Just like you, they are beginning to criticize themselves and will know if they do something wrong they never meet up to standards.  As a parent, it is really important that your child knows you love them and are pleased with them. They want to be just like you and really adore and admire you.
