Your toddler is 4 years and 10 months old!
At the age of four years and ten months, your child should be showing an interest in what you are doing, and asking lots of questions. At this stage your little one is also becoming more independent and making decisions by themselves. Role playing and imaginary games are a big part of the learning process and your child may also be organising and grouping toys and objects, refining their fine motor skills.
At the age of three years and four months to the age of five years old, the child is given another injection against Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) as well as another dose of DTaP/IPV.
At this stage, children are becoming increasingly inquisitive. It’s very normal for your child to be playing Dr’s and it’s all very normal to find your four year old in the middle of an anatomy check with another child. Try not to react with shock and explain that penises and vaginas are kept private. Children will generally be able to understand and they will probably be relieved, since they already have some sense the game they were playing was slightly taboo.
Your child will also be showing signs of remorse and can easily understand when they have done something wrong. They should be able to say sorry and mean it. At this stage they may be developing their friendships and have a best friend.
Your child should be able to answer simple questions, and speak in complete sentences at this stage. They should also be able to use prepositions in their language, such as ‘under’, ‘beside’ and ‘infront’. They may start to experiment with words and try using bigger words. Even if they get the word wrong or add letters to word that is incorrect, praise them for trying. At this stage, your child will thrive off positive encouragement and approval.
Gross Motor Skills
At four years and ten months, your child should be able to run in a more controlled way, where they start, stop, and turn, whilst doing so. This is a really good time to help develop balance and spatial awareness by joining them to a fun activity like gymnastics, football or ballet.
